8 Hot Tech Skills to watch out for in 2014


Another year is coming to an end, I am sure all of you had your ups and downs. You made some things happen and others didn’t go according to what you hoped for.

Tutoslive brings to you some of the most hot and happening technology skills that will make a mark in 2014. These skills are based on Computerworld recent survey on people.

1    1.  Programming/application development

Programming/application development


Topping the list is application and programming. As per the survey, developer and programmer job openings are the most difficult to fill. The hottest specialties will be in the mobile domain and big data. 49% of respondents said that they plan to hire for this skill in the next 12 months. Javascript technologies like node.js will be big in the market in 2014 so will be programming languages like Python and Ruby.

2    2. Help Desk and support

Help Desk

Ranked at no. 2, help desk/tech support. According to the survey, 37% of respondents said that they plan to hire for this skill in the coming 12 months. Many companies are bringing their service desk function in house which was earlier being outsourced. This function will provide a lot of job opportunities in the coming months.

3   3. Networking

 Another sought-after IT skill in 2014 will be 'networking', ranked at no. 3 in the survey. As per the study, 31% of respondents said that they plan to hire for this skill in the coming 12 months. 'Networking' ranked at no. 8 in last year's ranking.

4   4. Mobile management and device management

Mobile Applications

Mobile applications and device management. The fourth hottest skill for 2014 is 'mobile applications and device management'. Some 27% of survey respondents said that they plan to hire for this skill in the next 12 months.

5   5.  Project Management


25% of respondents said that they plan to hire for this skill in the next 12 months. While project management fell from its No. 2 position last year, it is considered a highly sought-after skill.


6.    Database Administration



Database administration -- which didn't even make last year's list -- will be hot in 2014, likely because of interest in big data. Database administration -- which didn't even make last year's list -- will be hot in 2014, likely because of interest in big data. 

7.    Security Compliance/Governance

21% of respondents said that they plan to hire for this skill in the next 12 months.

8.    Business Intelligence/Analytics

Analytics- The future 

18% of respondents said that they plan to hire for this skill in the next 12 months. With the volume of global data predicted to expand by a factor of 44 from 2009 to 2020 and reach 35.2 zettabytes. Big data will be one the big skills in the coming years more and more companies are laying stress on big data and Analytics.
